History Department

History is a dynamic, exciting and contemporary subject which covers the social, economic and political heritage of many cultures and societies. We provide opportunities for independent research, creative model making, games and extension activities for gifted and talented students. Many excursions are also offered, including local sites as well as Canberra.

Courses offered in Years 7 and 8 focus on the ancient world’s societies, such as Egypt, China, Greece and Rome. Additionally, classes study Vikings, the Middle Ages, Medieval Japan and the Conquest of the Americas.

In Stage 5, C19-20th Australian history is the principle focus. Our topics include the World Wars and the Great Depression. Aboriginal history and perspectives of migrants also allow students to develop cross-cultural understanding.

In Stage 6, both Modern and Ancient History are popular choices. Study of American and Japanese history is the focus of Modern History. A detailed study of the War in the Pacific, as well as the rise of Fascism are key learning opportunities. Ancient History students explore Greek, Roman and Persian cultures. Modern archaeological techniques are taught, along with myths and legends, and battle tactics.

Extension History, which focuses on the philosophy of history, allows further intellectual depth for keen historians.
